We are very aware that our vans and some of our machinery produce carbon so to offset that we have subscribed to Make it Wild, who plant trees in North Yorkshire and beyond. The trees use carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and it’s calculated that one tree can typically absorb 3.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide during the first 40 years of its life.
To start with we used their carbon calculator to ascertain just how much carbon we were generating. Then we know how many trees we need to plant and the cost of planting those trees is paid for monthly. Here some approximate figures, in tonnes of carbon dioxide, emitted by the following activities:
- a typical long-haul flight per person: 3 tonnes - ten thousand miles driving in a typical family petrol car: 5 tonnes - new clothes, accessories per person per year: 1 tonne - recreation, leisure, entertainment per person per year: 2 tonnes - heating a typical UK home for a year: 2.5 tonnes - lighting, household appliances in a typical house per year: 1.5 tonnes - eating beef once per day for a year: 2.5 tonnes
